What’s special about this video? It was created in-browser, and it combines free assets from Canva, with a Warcraft screenshot…. which Canva AUTOMATICALLY REMOVED THE BACKGROUND.

This took literally 2 minutes to create, render and download…writing this description will take a lot longer than creating the graphic! I use way too many web apps, software, SaaS, scripts and homebrew software to list… covering a gamut of services offered by the business I run, from SEO to Video Production… I love being a geek, but I love sharing freebies and suggestions more. If you follow me on social, you might have saved yourself thousands of dollars so far… literally.

At the time of writing, I just posted how to get Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Kingdom Come: Deliverance, for absolutely free – totally legally and totally legit. My point being… I only share select things – 90% of the time it’s totally free and it’s not a referral link (as in, I get nothing back other than the satisfaction and maybe a comment saying thanks, which means a lot!). I rate Canva, It’s an unbelievably powerful tool, and it’s gained features that I would have said are impossible for the price. In this video, the background bokeh style video is part of Canva’s video library, so I just drag and drop that and send it to back…then I used a template for the controller hands and text, and ungrouped, typed new text followed by maybe the most impressive part: I took a screenshot from Warcraft, literally from my Clipboard (after pressing print screen) and pasted it directly into Canva, no saving and uploading, just Print Screen, then Ctrl + V and boom I have a WoW screenshot in my design…except it’s my character and I don’t want anything except my character’s headshot.

This time last year I would have opened the image in Photoshop, and carefully cropped, cut out the non-character pixels, and saved as a png with a transparent background… that alone would have taken probably 5-10 minutes depending how precise I was being (even using smart selection or magnetic lasso, you have some fiddling to get it right)…. Canva allows you to remove the background with 1 mouse click.

I’m stunned at how well it works! Once again, you can start using Canva today, and forever, for FREE – of course the Pro subscription gives you bonus features, but the totally free version is powerful enough to do anything from creating a logo, to creating a full merchandise line. If you wanted to be a (low cost) graphic designer, offering quick and cheap solutions to people who want graphics, such as Web Banner, Facebook Cover Image and Twitch Icons…this tool would pay for itself. I work from scratch in Adobe Creative Suite for my clients, but for myself, and my social, I like using Canva because I can express an opinion, share some info or create a meme, quickly and easily – and it’s simplicity keeps me on topic as I’m usually working on 4 or 5 things at once… ADHD, ADD or whatever, but in the UK it’s not really recognised. So, to the grave I’ll take my (literally) 30+ open tabs, while running WoW dailies, editing a video in premiere, working from a Virtual Machine to scrape useful data for SEO, writing long YouTube video descriptions and who knows what else I’m doing on a given night, in parallel.
